Counting Our Chickens in the YC - Teacher Lisa

There's nothing cuter than baby chicks...except maybe sweet little children holding them! What a special week this was 🐣!

When children arrived on Tuesday, our incubator was full of freshly-hatched chicks, peep-peep-peeping.

On Thursday the children had a chance to hold them if they wanted to. Teacher Sheri supervised the holding while our parent helper made sure everyone did a careful job washing their hands before and after!

The chicks went back to the farm on Friday afternoon, and are being well looked after by one of the hens, who was very excited to see them.

In celebration of "the big hatch" there were eggs all over our classroom. They were in the texture table with lots of little things to tuck inside.

They were in the water tub along with more toys, cups and bowls.

At the creation station there were paper eggs to decorate as well as styrofoam eggs and toothpicks for making egg sculptures.

Several of our parent-led activities were egg/chicken themed, too! On Tuesday the children made chicks using their hand prints. They added googly eyes, beaks, feathers and made grass by painting with a fork. These are on display in our classroom so come in and take a look!

On Thursday they made their own egg shakers by putting beans from the texture table inside plastic eggs and then decorating them with Sharpies and colored tape. We used our shakers to sing a song called, "I Know a Chicken" during our story time.

Our other parent-led activity this week was a surprise for Mother's Day and we're keeping it a secret ;).

Some of the other things that were going on around the room included a translucent marble run on the light table...

play dough, wind-up toys, and necklace-making...

a Duplo train set on the building table...

and lots of building and playing with the toys on the rug!

During our story time we did the Chicken Dance, read stories about chickens and butterflies, and enjoyed having friends share their houses.

There was beautiful weather for going outside this week!

Our caterpillars have climbed to the top of their container and are snug and cozy in their cocoons. While we wait another week or so for them to begin emerging as butterflies, we'll be doing activities about families and growing.

Looking forward to another fun week with you and your wonderful children!

Lisa and Sheri
