Chick Week! (OC) - Teacher Sheri

Our chicks have hatched and their arrival made for an "eggstra" exciting and special week!

On Monday, we observed that some of the eggs had pipped. They starting hatching that evening and by the next day we had chicks!

The kids were SO excited to hold the babies and it is always such an joyful experience! After their time with us, the chicks will be heading back to their farm and even to a Small Friends family!

Amidst all the chick excitement, we stayed super busy with activities this week. They did their second to last self portrait of the year and it is always interesting to see how much they have changed over time.

At the other table, the kids placed mementos in the memory boxes. An alien to remember space week and a chick for this week went in their boxes. They loved the aliens!

Our art this week was astro-blast chick painting! The kids dipped socks full of rocks into yellow and gold paint, then sent them blasting down into a box where they splattered paint. After adding beaks, eyes, and feathers, we have some pretty cute chicks hanging on our wall!

The other parent led activity was a collaborative chick game. The kids had to move the mother hen along the path to collect all her baby chicks and get them back in the coop.

We like to include open ended art in the classroom for many reasons: it fosters creativity, the kids learn about using different materials, they gain a sense of ownership and pride in their own creations, just to name a few benefits! On Friday, the kids could choose an egg carton and then decorate or make it into anything they imagined. We provided materials and they brought their imaginations!

Around the room, there were signs of eggs and spring everywhere. The texture table was full of plastic eggs, scoops, cups, chicks, and bunnies.

In the water tub were more plastic eggs, egg tongs, pitchers, and cups.

At creation station, glittery styrofoam eggs were a big hit. The kids stuck toothpicks into florist foam and topped them with the eggs, making all sorts of structures and designs.

And the duplo train set was lots of fun at the building table.

In other news, we enjoyed some beautiful days outside at recess.

We headed to the library for story time.

Friends shared about all the awesome things they are doing with Panda.

We learned how to spell CHICKEN with letters and sign language. We also got our tail feathers shaking to the Chicken Dance!

Here are some more pictures of the kids at play.

As this wonderful, whirlwind week came to a close, we took a moment to talk about holding the chicks at Friendship Circle. Next week, the classroom will be in full bloom and we are looking forward to it!

All the best,

Sheri and Lisa
