Will you be my neighbor? - OC Teacher Meghan

Paper airplanes, stomp rockets and a community mural were just a few activities we had in store for the kids this week as we started our community unit.

On Monday the kids arrived and discovered that the Small Friends Grocery Store was open for business!

On our carpet we had steering wheels with pedals that took our friends on adventures all over the world.

Our chicken eggs have arrived and the kids are so excited. We have started to learn about how a chick grows and develops while they are in their eggs. The kids love looking at our plastic set of eggs that show the chicks in each stage of their development.

In keeping with our transportation theme we had boats and bears in our water tub this week.

On our flannel board we had people that the kids could dress up to show their different occupations such as fire fighter, librarian and vet.

We had a simple car game on our light table that the kids enjoyed playing together.

On our building table we had magnetic car builders.

On Friday we put out letter builders on the building table as an extension of a parent led activity we did earlier in the week.

At creation station the kids made paper airplanes after learning how to make them with a parent during one of our parent led activities. The kids also got creative with lots of glue, tape and string!

Play dough remains a constant source of fun for the kids.

The kids loved slicing and dicing velcro plastic fruit.

Dramatic and creative play was occurring in all corners of the room this week. Here is a peek at all the action.

Lots of great books were read in our book nook this week. One of the kids new favorites is Peanut Butter and Cupcake

On Monday our grocery store opened its doors. We had one of our brave parent helpers help manage the chaos as he facilitated helping the kids to shop, cashier, stock and bag groceries at the store. This was a very popular area of the classroom all week long.

Our second parent led activity on Monday was discussing what makes up a community. The kids decided what was important to them in their community and made a visual representation of this item that they added to a community mural. Some of the things the kids came up with for the mural was a hair dresser, a garbage truck, a balloon, a family, a vet, a janitor and an alien.

On Wednesday the kids got a chance to explore letter builders with one of our helpers. These provided a great tactile way to work on letter formation and identification. We put these builders on the building table on Friday so the kids had another opportunity to explore and build with them.

Our second parent activity on Wednesday was learning how to fold paper airplanes. After the kids folded and decorated their planes they got a chance to see how well they flew out in the hallway.

On Friday the transportation fun continued as the kids headed outside to shoot stomp rockets off. The kids had a blast with this gross motor activity.

We have received 23 eggs from the farm this year! On Friday the kids made predictions on how many of the eggs they think will hatch. First the kids wrote numbers 1-12 on their number line (we helped with numbers 13 - 23). Then they decided how many eggs they think will hatch which they wrote on an egg they had cut out. They attached this egg on the corresponding number on their number line. We have many optimists in the room who think all 23 eggs will hatch this year.

At circle time this week we read some awesome stories about food and communities including Bunny Mail and The Watermelon Seed.

We continue working on letter sounds and building simple three letter words with the kids.

We did a lot of dancing during circle and love seeing your kids amazing dance moves!

Friends shared their adventures with panda!

We had so much fun with your sweet kids this week. Next week get ready for a pizza parlor in the classroom!
See you soon,
Meghan and Christine
