It's Pumpkin Time in the YC! Teacher Lisa

Our Halloween festivities wouldn't be complete without some pumpkin fun, and this week there were pumpkins everywhere!

We added some mini pumpkins to our texture table.

There were pumpkins out on our building table, along with hammers, nails, golf tees (and safety goggles, of course!).

On Tuesday children used fly swatters dipped in metallic paint to swat pumpkins. This resulted in a very beautiful pumpkin patch out in our hallway.

The other parent-led activity Tuesday was to "carve" a pumpkin. There was no official plan for carving - instead, everyone could practice sawing and cutting wherever they wanted. We also had plastic bugs and creepy crawlies inside the pumpkins that children could reach in and grab. If that proved to be too cold and slimy, they could use long tongs instead!

And speaking of slime, we had some out on our light table and it was a HUGE (and also sticky) hit. If some of it came home on clothes, a little vinegar works quite effectively to break it down so it can be washed off.

There were paper pumpkins out at the creation station and some of the children enjoyed using the seeds from our classroom pumpkins to make something fun!

On Thursday children ventured down the hall to our spooky tunnel. Armed with friends and flashlights, they were invited to crawl through this as many times as they wanted to. They were also welcome to watch, if that was what they preferred.

Our second parent-led activity was helping the children use potatoes that had jack-o-lantern faces carved in them to make collages inspired by the poem "Five Little Pumpkins".

Our water tub had a ring of ice in it, filled with all kinds of Halloween toys and trinkets. Children worked at excavating them by pouring water and working them loose with their fingers or tweezers. This made for some finger-chilling fun!

Around the classroom children played with Legos, read stories, played with play dough and had lots of fun together.

During our time at the carpet, we read some of our favorite Halloween stories: The Little Old Lady Who Wasn't Afraid of Anything, Halloween Bugs, Do NOT Open This Book! and Click, Clack, Boo! We loved all of the giggles these stories elicited!

We also told a story about a little witch that didn't want to share her magic brew, but then decided she would enjoy it more with her friends beside her. We put the props for this story in our reading area so the children could retell the story.

We're getting really good at our stick songs and our yoga! This week we stretched while doing our volcano breaths.

We got pretty wet outside on Thursday, but thankfully Tuesday wasn't so bad.

We're excited for our final Halloween celebrations next week and can't wait to see your little ones in their costumes!

Happy Haunting!
Lisa and Sheri
