Fairy Tales and Rainbows in the YC - Teacher Lisa

We wrapped up our fairy tale theme and played with light and rainbows this week. We also had a visit from a real pig!

On Tuesday we had all the colors of the rainbow available and the children used their favorites to paint the bottom of a muffin tin. Then they turned it over and pressed it to a piece of paper, creating a collage of rainbow color!

Legend has it that there is treasure to be found at the end of the rainbow, so we had some fun filling leprechaun pots with treasures (green gems) and counting how many it took to sink the pots in water. This was a fun follow up to our sink/float activity from the week before.

On Thursday we made rainbow bracelets out of fruity cereal. Children strung the cereal on chenille stems and then decided whether they wanted to wear them, eat them, or do a little of both!

Our other parent-led activity on Thursday was exploring light using mirrors, kaleidoscopes, flashlights and prisms. We had all kinds of different items that the children could experiment with. We will be doing more with light and shadows during our space theme in the weeks to come.

We were very lucky to have Sawyer the pig come and visit! Sawyer is the beloved pet of one of our families from the other classroom and he hung out outside, munching grass while the children took turns going out to visit him. We learned that Sawyer likes to sleep on the couch and knows several fun tricks - including how to "shake"!

We also took time to give our grass a haircut on Thursday - a fun way to encourage everyone to practice using scissors. Most of the children took their grass home, where you can continue to water it and trim it as long as you want :).

Our bridge/boat was in the classroom a little longer and the kids had fun using it to act out The Three Billy Goats Gruff, as a boat for some fishing fun and as a base for block structures.

The castle was also out for one more week. The kids have had so much fun playing with the knights and horses!

In the texture table, the trolls were joined by leprechauns and there were lots of trinkets and treasures to bury and dig up.

There were more treasures and trinkets in the water tub that the kids enjoyed scooping and collecting in buckets.

The light table was covered with rainbow-colored discs that the children could sort and organize in little plastic cups.

In the spirit of St. Patrick's Day, we had green play dough and we put all kinds of green supplies out at our creation station. Of course, everything is better with lots of tape and glue...

Here are a few more photos of all of the things the kids enjoyed doing during their play time:

At the carpet this week we sang songs about pigs playing in the mud and learned a song about the colors of the rainbow. We read stories about wolves who AREN'T the bad guys of fairy tales, giants who come to play and mice who dance in paint.

We loved going outside to play in the sunshine!

Next week we will head to outer space for some astronomical fun :).

We'll see you soon!
Lisa and Sheri
