There was a beautiful full moon in the sky this week - perfect timing for us to blast off into space!
We explored the sun, moon and planets with some non-fiction books and then used the information to make sensory bottles. Children worked in small groups and each group focused on one thing, creating bottles about the sun, moon, Saturn, Mars, Earth and the asteroid belt. Invite your child to tell you about the bottle s/he worked on!
During our story time, each group told a little bit about the bottle they made. For the rest of the week the bottles were out on our light table for closer observation.
We used chalk, glue and colored sand to create our own beautiful planets.
We played with shadows in several different ways this week. You may have seen our "old school" overhead projectors in the hallway. Children had fun placing different objects on the projectors and then tracing the shadows on a piece of paper. It was challenging to trace without getting in the way!
Once they were finished tracing, they added watercolor to create some very bright and beautiful artwork!
We had a shadow screen inside our classroom as well, for more open-ended play and exploration. The kids loved loading objects onto the projector and then going around to the other side of the screen to view the shadows they made.
We had a couple of non-space activities this week, one of which was playing "Go Fish". This is such a great game for kids this age, and several friends already knew how to play. We used a deck of alphabet cards, so they got some letter/sound recognition practice in as well!
We also added glittery green shamrocks to our memory boxes and filled another page in our sticker books with leprechauns and all kinds of St. Patrick's Day stickers.
The water tub was dry this week, filled with kinetic sand and space toys. Many friends spent time squeezing, molding and exploring this unique medium.
There were some aliens and other scenes from outer space on the flannel board.
At the light table, children could use their fingers or tweezers to place marbles in suction cup"craters".
We set up some training facilities so that our future astronauts could practice spinning through space and walking on the moon :).
There were paper plates with all kinds of star stickers and foam shapes out at the creation station. We also put the leftover sand from our art project out for the kids to use again.
At the building table Kappla blocks were stacked to create all kinds of structures and tall towers.
Ginger and Scarlet got some love and attention in the form of snuggles and treats.
Here are some more pictures of your kiddos during their free play time this week:
We sang songs about the colors we see outside and about a man who lives on the moon (ask your child to tell you about his silly face). We read books about space and friendship. Our Friendship Circle was about what we like to do when we feel mad or sad.
We had fun at the library, hearing a story about a magic portal and singing songs with Miss Casey and her ukulele.
Our friends who shared about Panda all did a fantastic job!
We spent one more week doing our Unicorn Yoga - invite your yogi to teach you this fun series.
We played a variety of percussion instruments while we danced to the song, "Happy" by Pharrell Williams and also danced to a song by Laurie Berkner called "Rocket Ship Run."
We had a little bit of sun, a little bit of rain and a little bit of in-between for our time outside.
We'll explore space for one more week after Spring Break, and then it will be time to start incubating eggs! We hope you all have a wonderful week and we'll see you in April :)
Until then...
Lisa and Sheri
