Sunny Sunflowers in the OC - Teacher Christine

What a beautiful sun-filled week we had in the OC! We jumped right in to a week of learning all about sunflowers through exploration of this beautiful flower, sensory activities, art, books, and songs.

Our texture table was filled with vases, sunflowers, and seed balls for the children to play with and explore. This area continues to be a highlight. Seeds flow through fingers, pour from buckets, and spin through the windmills.

From polka dot soup last week to bears in boats this week, the children had a blast floating boats, filling them with bears and sorting bears by color. The water tub is always a hit!

Creation station continues to be popular, and this week we had yellow and orange sunflowers as bases along with a variety of paper plates. The gemstones are in constant use as beautiful, shiny decorations. Cutting, gluing, and designing masterpieces is not only great fun, but also wonderful for fine motor skill practice!

This week at the play dough table we had squishy green play dough. In honor of sunflower week, we set out a flower shaped tray full of greenery, yellow buttons, pipe cleaners, flower shapes, and sunflower seeds and the children had fun making flowers, cakes, worms, and all sorts of fun shapes!

Translucent wedgits were popular at the light table this week. The children loved building towers with these interesting shapes!

We made lots of books at the writing table this week!

At our building table we had magnetic balls and rods for the kids to explore.

The "Book Nook" was popular this week. Friends took time to read books on their own and enjoyed story time with Teacher Meghan, too!

Dramatic play is always so much fun. Friends played collaborative games all morning long, combining kitchen play with stuffed animals, fire fighting costumes, and building materials. This group loves to work together!

Puzzles are always a hit and the children loved playing the alphabet discovery game from last week.

The alpha bots are very popular and the children also loved making shapes with rubber bands on a grid.

On Monday we painted rocks. Next week, we will take a trip to the garden and each child will find a special place for their  beautiful rock.

On Wednesday and Friday the children made sunflower sculptures. These beautiful creations are displayed in the hallway. Take a look!

On Monday, the children dissected a giant sunflower and looked through magnifying glasses to see different parts of the flower.

On Wednesday, we played a sunflower counting game. Friends took turns rolling dice and then squishing the correct number of sunflower seeds into their flower. After a couple of turns, they counted up the total!

On Friday, we played a game with our giant blocks! They practiced finding shapes, built beautiful structures and then learned where to return the shapes when they were finished.

Circle time is always a blast. We sang a sunflower song to the tune of "I'm a Little Tea Pot", danced with Teacher Meghan and listened to stories about sunflowers. Teacher Meghan sang a sunflower song that taught us all about the growing cycle of this beautiful flower. We also had a blast looking through our summer memory books and telling our friends all about our summer adventures!

We had sunny weather this week and zoomed around on tricycles at recess!

Thank you for sharing you amazing children with us! Next week we continue our sunflower explorations and start learning all about tigers and elephants, too!

Warmly,
Christine and Meghan
