Happy New Year, Older Class! - Teacher Sheri

We were so happy to see everyone back at school! We missed those smiling faces over the break and loved hearing about all the things you and your kids were up to.

We eased into our first day back by doing some fun snowflake stamping! The kids enjoyed stamping with paint and adding glitter.

At the other activity table they designed and built with toothpicks and marshmallows. This is a great STEM activity and, well, marshmallows are just fun!

The kids were so excited to see the new things in our wintery classroom. They especially liked the water tub full of snow...brrr! Insta-Snow is an incredible material that puffs up into life-like snow when you add water. The kids played in the snow with bowls, cups, straws, scoops, and gems.

At the texture table, polar bears and glass ice blocks invited friends over to play.

There was more snow fun at the light table, where kids could build snowmen. But we ended up following their lead when the kids began setting up the acrylic pieces instead. They created their own scene!

The marble run captivated kids at the building table. It takes skill to figure out how to assemble the pieces and they really enjoyed the challenge.

The flannel board was a quiet place to put numbered snowflakes in order.

On Monday, we began two multi-day projects. The first one was creating a beautiful scene of birch trees in winter. The kids decided where they wanted their trees to be and placed tape down. Next they gave the paper a color wash with watercolors. Then they sprinkled Epsom salts over the whole thing, which gives the art a sparkly texture and also makes the wet watercolor disperse into snowflake-like designs.

The tape was pulled off on the next school day and the kids added dark lines on the trees, like the texture of birch bark. They mounted the artwork and it looks awesome hanging in the classroom.

This time of year we begin to transition our morning check-in process to include name writing. The kids progress from identifying their name card by picture, to recognizing their written name without a picture, and finally to writing their name every day upon arrival. To kick this off, we had the kids cut their picture off their name cards. Then they identified the letters in their name and wrote each one of them on circles of white paper.

On the next school day, they reviewed the letters in their name and glued the letters in their name to a piece of paper. They decorated the top circle and ta-da, they each have a name snowman!

Speaking of letters, the class did some letter fishing on Friday. The kids sat in a boat and cast their lines to "catch" fish and identify the letters. The boat was used for imaginative play the rest of the week!

We also had fun with letters at carpet time, singing and spelling S-N-O-W-Y, a song about Snowy the snowman.

The kids created their own type of snow at one of the activity tables. This moldable snow is made from a combination of grated Ivory soap, torn tissue paper, and water. They loved grating the soap using the hand held graters and the box graters. Stay tuned to see what we will do with this soapy snow concoction.

At circle time, Teacher Lisa played a really fun mitten color matching game with the class.

We explored different songs and chants with scarves, such as "Popcorn Kernels" and "The Wishy Washy Washer Woman."

At our Friday Friendship Circle, we passed around the Snowy stuffy and the kids shared something they worry about. This was inspired by two books we read, Molly Lou Melon and Wemberly Worried. It gave us a chance to reflect upon the fact we may worry about things, but we are brave and get through it!

Here are some more pictures of these awesome kids learning and playing this week.

Next week, we have a lot more winter fun planned. Thank you so much for letting us be a part of your child's preschool journey!

Warmly,

Sheri and Lisa
