Crystals, Snowflakes, and Dinosaurs in the OC! - Teacher Christine

We had a blast this week making different kinds of crystals and learning about snowflakes. Winter fun just keeps on going in the older class!

We kicked off the week with an exciting crystal making project. In groups of four or five, the kids added all of the ingredients needed to make brightly colored crystals. These crystals are on display in the classroom and keep growing everyday! Take a peek the next time you are in the room. These are truly  stunning and the kids loved seeing how much they changed from Wednesday to Friday.

They did a great job taking turns and working together.

They added teal, purple, green, and fuchsia to wet paper towels to start the process.

Next, the our wonderful parent helper poured over a mixture of water, salt, ammonia, and bluing to start the crystal making process.

The crystals started forming quickly on day 1.

Day 2 is pretty exciting!

Wow! The kids were so excited to see these gorgeous crystals on Friday, day 3. We will have these out next week as well to observe the changes.

On Friday we made another type of crystal using pipe cleaners and a borax and warm water solution. Each child started off making a special shape out of a blue pipe cleaner and then we added the borax solution. We are excited to see what they look like on Monday!

Our second activity on Wednesday was snowflake matching. The kids practiced matching shapes with one large and one small snowflake. They loved using magnifying glasses to find the match!

The magnetic marble run was out on Friday and was an incredible hit! The kids got to work together to create a marble run based on a diagram. They all wanted to do this activity multiple times!

We added dinosaurs to the texture tub and loved seeing how excited the kids were to play with all of the different dinos!

Dinosaurs big and small also invaded our water tub.

Winter themes continue at our creation station. The kids had fun cutting snowflakes, decorating mittens and snowmen, and, as always, making gifts for their families and friends.

Our play dough station provides endless opportunities for creativity.

The older class had a wonderful time playing with our dinosaur themed flannel board!

We love to read books from circle time in our book nook! These books are often requested again and again.

The older class had so much fun making snowflakes with beads and pipe cleaners at our fine motor table. This activity is a great way to practice fine motor skills by stringing beads and pattern making.

We had a fun snowman counting game out for play this week as well.

The kids also love to choose from a variety of activities that we have out in our puzzle shelves. They are so creative and love to problem solve.

Baby Mabel gets lots of love and care each week.

Circle time is always so much fun. We love to sing and dance with shakers, read, and learn new songs.

This week we read a book about a hen looking for mittens, a very silly book about vegetables wearing underpants, and a book about how dinosaurs behave at school.

We learned a fun poem about kittens finding their mittens and a song about a moose named Fred.

We also practiced our Arctic Animal Yoga.

We read The Mitten by Jan Brett and stuffed our own mitten with animals as we read the book. This activity and book will be out at our flannel board next week to play with.

Recess is so much fun! The kids are learning to cross the monkey bars and love playing chase. Riding the bikes, playing tag, and collaborative play are all activities that they love.

Next week we will start the week off with self portraits and memory boxes to take a look back at all of the wintery fun we have had this season. We will also celebrate the season of coziness on Wednesday with pajama day and pancakes!

Thanks for sharing your wonderful children with us!

Warmly,
Christine and Meghan
