Happy Lunar New Year in the OC - Teachers Lisa and Jelena

We had a combination of Valentine's Day and Lunar New Year activities in our classroom this week. It's the Year of the Tiger, so there were tigers lounging in our texture table, along with chopsticks, bowls, spoons, take-out containers and lots of red and gold trinkets.

At the water table children could catch snakes and water beads.

At our game table there were chopsticks, dice, candy and bowls for a counting game.

We made some fun patterns with the candy, too!

There were blocks and toy ponies to build with at the light table.

We put the dollhouse out on our building table and the kids had fun arranging furniture and putting people inside.

There were LOTS of projects at our creation station and writing table. The kids are getting comfortable with the low-temp glue gun, which allows them to have lots more options for creating.

We traded a few of our large toys with the other classroom, and the kids loved playing with the semi trucks and Fisher Price garage.

We are lucky that the medical staff in our classroom is good at what they do - so many of our toys have been sick lately!

The kids did a great job signing in with their new name cards Friday. We prepared for that all week, starting with making "name snowmen" on Monday. First everyone selected the snowman with the same number of snowballs as his/her name.

Then they wrote one letter on each snowball.

Their final step was adding a face, scarf, hat and arms.

On Wednesday we looked at their new sign-in cards. They are double-sided, with a name to trace on one side, and space to write their names independently on the other. They may choose which side to use each day when they arrive. They know that the colored tape on the markers is where they should hold on - they are all doing really well with this!

On Friday the kids learned a new game called, "Bitty Kitty." The object of the game is to get the kittens around the sleeping mama (and daddy) cats without waking them up. It's a visual discrimination and memory game. See if your child can tell you how to play!

Here are some of the other things they had fun doing this week.

During our group time we read Poppleton, Kitty Princess, and Lion Dancer - a non-fiction book about a little boy who was going to be in his first Lunar New Year parade. We also celebrated a birthday, learned about the animals on the Zodiac calendar, and played a number recognition game.

It was cold but sunny outside and the kids had fun playing different kinds of tag and trying to save worms :)

We're looking forward to the fun days we have planned over the next couple of weeks - wearing pj's and exchanging Valentines! We'll see you all soon!

Warmly,

Lisa and Jelena
