Apple Pie and Squirrel Snacks in the OC - Teacher Christine

We continued our celebration of this beautiful fall season with an apple and squirrel theme this week in the OC!

On Wednesday, the kids made their very own apple pie in a cup! First we made apple sauce -- each child took a turn cutting up half an apple, then we added it to the pot with a bit of water and cinnamon and let it simmer away. They each got to crush half a graham cracker for their crust and when the applesauce was finished, we layered it on the graham cracker crust and topped it with whipped cream for snack. Yum!

In our second activity on Wednesday, we taught the kids a fun acorn alphabet game! Each child took a turn pulling out various objects from a box (apple, bug, car...) and identifying the first letter sound. Then, they found an acorn with the same letter and placed it inside. This game was also available to play on Friday and they loved it!

On Friday we had so much fun doing colorful leaf rubbings! We had four different leaf templates taped to the table and each child took a turn using jumbo crayons to create a leaf image. They were excited to choose their colors and to create multiple images.

Also on Friday the kids made their own squirrel snacks with pretzels, Goldfish, Crispix, Cheerios, and mini chocolate chips! They each chose what to add to their mix and then our wonderful parent helper hid their snack bag in the room. The kids had a blast wearing a squirrel headband and running around the room searching for their delicious snacks just like little squirrels.

On the flannel board we added little apples and pictures of each child! They were delighted to come in on Wednesday and discover these adorable pictures.

We had kinetic sand, chestnuts, pie tins and ramekins in the water tub this week. The kids had so much fun squishing it and making lots of yummy cakes!

The play dough table is such a busy place. The kids love to build and sculpt with the squishy dough and often make cakes and pies, faces, letters, and big piles of play dough with treasures hiding inside.

We had squirrel builders, logs, and fairies at the building table this week.

We had transparent tree trunks, acorns, and leaves at the light table.

We debuted a few new trucks at in our toy area and these are a huge hit! The kids play many collaborative and games and use their imaginations to come up with such exciting play. Playtime is so exciting and lively!

At circle time this week we sang songs about apples, acorns, and silly fruit. We also debuted the songs "Albuquerque Turkey" and "Funga Alafia".

We also love to read and enjoyed books like I'm Not Scared, a book about a young owl who is trying hard not to be scared of the night. The kids also enjoyed a silly book called Fall Mixed Up and a rhyming booked called Jazz Baby among others. The kids also love to dance with shakers and had fun with our Thanksgiving Yoga.

Teacher Meghan led a beautiful Friendship Circle and the kids shared such sweet sentiments of gratitude and happiness. We will do another Friendship Circle this upcoming week.

We are so thankful for such beautiful weather during recess!

Next week we will make egg carton owls, take a nature walk, and make stone soup. We are so thankful to spend our days with your wonderful children!

Warmly,
Christine and Meghan
