Sunflower Adventures in the OC - Teacher Lisa

This week our classroom was filled with sunflowers!

At the texture table children could arrange them in beautiful bouquets.

One of our fine motor activities was using tweezers (or fingers) to pluck out the seeds.

There were leaves, pipe cleaners, gems and seeds to explore the concept of "sunflower" at the play dough table.

Several of our parent-led activities this week were sunflower-related as well. On Monday children observed them carefully, identifying their different parts and sharing questions and ideas.

Wednesday they drew upon those observations to construct clay models of sunflowers.

Friday they used real sunflowers along with their clay creations as inspirations for sunflower sketches. They will paint those next week. Such creative artists!!

Friday they also rolled dice and pressed the corresponding number of sunflower seeds into play dough.

Not everything was about sunflowers, though :). There were magnetic wands and discs in our water tub, or as we call it, polka dot soup!

The Magna-Tiles were out on the building table and there were translucent Duplos on the light table.

The creation station and writing table were areas of open-ended inspiration.

We put a matching game from last week out, along with an activity we had done with the younger class (catching "worms" with a lint roller).

Our other parent activities were all about rocks and blocks. On Monday children used acrylic paints to decorate rocks which they placed in our garden.

Wednesday they played a block game where they spun a spinner and gathered the matching blocks. They worked together to build something and then returned each block to our shelves according to its shape.

Here are some of the other ways children enjoyed their free time during the week:

Some of the things we did at the carpet included songs about a button factory and an ice cream shop.

We did the Freeze Dance with our shakers and some elephant breaths for yoga.

We learned some new verses to "Two Little Blackbirds". See if your child can remember some of them. Clues are...a hill, car, stick, cloud, cup and lily pad.

Friends are enjoying sharing their Summer Memory Journals with a teacher during free time and then choosing a page to share with their peers at the carpet. They're doing a great job!

We are always thankful for sunny weather and lots of play time outside.

As our Ice Cream Social approaches, we'll be doing lots of clowning around with a circus theme. Looking forward to fun under the Big Top in the days ahead!

Until then...
Lisa and Sheri
