Hello, Butterflies! Teacher Lisa - YC

What a special week it was as we welcomed our butterflies and had a chance to hold them in the butterfly tent!

One of the stories we read while we were learning about butterflies was The Very Hungry Caterpillar. This week the children all got to create props so that they can retell this story in their own words. First, they used pom-poms and popsicle sticks to make fuzzy caterpillars.

On the next school day, they selected several pictures of food that they thought their caterpillar might like to eat in their version of the story.

They also made little butterflies out of plastic bags, tissue paper and pipe cleaners. All of these items were placed in a brown bag and can be used to tell the story to you at home!

We continue to talk about growing and changing and there have been lots of friends stopping by the bulletin board with baby pictures on it. They can lift the flap for each picture to find out who each baby is. Of course, they especially love to show each other their own photos and giggle about how they looked "when they were little".

We played a game that required rolling dice and then moving mama ducks around a game board so that they could collect their ducklings along the way.

At the light table this week there were supplies for making faces, including yarn, buttons, and acetate features that children could arrange however they wanted to.

Bristle Blocks were out at the building table. These blocks are easy to push together in order to create all kinds of things!

There were butterflies to decorate at the creation station and awesome purple play dough with glitter at the play dough table.

Frogs, lily pads and water toys were in the water tub and there were all kinds of animals to play with in the texture table.

Teacher Sheri told a flannel story about friendship using butterflies and flowers and these items were available in the reading area, along with flannel children and outfits to dress them with.

As always, each area of the classroom was busy at some point during our week!

During our story time we learned a poem called "The Roly Poly Caterpillar" and another silly chant about Herman the Worm. Teacher Sheri taught a fun game about passing a bean bag and friends continued sharing their houses. We are almost through all of them!

It's always fun to see our friends from the other classroom when we go outside to play, and the kids enjoy swinging, chasing each other, climbing, jumping, hanging and riding bikes!

Next week we have a multi-step house building project to look forward to, and will also be heading out to the garden to plant sunflower seeds!

Until then...
Lisa and Sheri
