Welcome to the OC Pizzeria! Teacher Lisa

What better place to begin a tour of our neighborhood than the Small Friends Pizzeria?! We had so much fun this week making pizzas, washing and chopping fruits & veggies and whipping up parfaits!

The texture table was full of produce to harvest.

At the water tub there were fruits and veggies to wash, but the more amazing option was using the condiment bottles to send water shooting into the air! The kids also had fun filling tiny cups with water and playing with squishy spaghetti.

For the mechanics in the class, there were all kinds of parts to connect together with nuts and bolts at our building table.

The play dough bakery was as busy as ever.

Our dramatic play area was transformed into a Pizza Hut.

We had one lingering activity from our space theme - a rocket ship donated by one of our families. The kids had a blast playing inside!

While we enjoyed pizza and fruit parfaits,  Scarlet and Ginger had some treats, too.

Several of our parent helper activities were about food this week. On Wednesday, the kids used paper and paint as crust and pizza sauce. They got some cutting practice preparing their crust, and then sprinkled real spices over their sauce. Additional ingredients included felt pepperoni, olives and cheese. These amazing creations are hanging out in our hallway.

Another activity was following recipes to create pizzas out of felt. To extend this activity, children added the ingredients of several recipes together, or looked at a pre-made pizza and identified the recipe card it came from.

Later in the week this activity was available on our flannel board. It's fun to make pizza-faces!

On Friday the kids got to chop real fruit and add it to vanilla yogurt for parfaits. Their final touch was grinding graham crackers with a pestle and mortar and sprinkling it over the top.

Delicious!

On Monday everyone had an opportunity to compose a song on our keyboard. They played keys marked with different colors of tape and then used corresponding colored markers to make musical notation.

For the rest of the week this was out for them to continue playing with. Their music has been saved in their portfolios.

On Wednesday we played checkers with our parent helper and the kids continued to play it during their free time on Friday.

During our free time the kids were also busy building with Legos, putting puzzles together, playing games and making cool things at our creation station.

We are so excited about the 24 eggs in our incubator! We read a book about the stages of development from embryo to chick. Many of the children remembered this book from last year and were able to recall a lot of the information. They are enjoying the models we have out next to the incubator, and we take a little time each day to see what's happening.

We continue to create opportunities for the kids to practice letter recognition. One of our parent helper activities this week was playing a parking lot game made out of a pizza box. There were 26 cars with lower case letters on them and the kids' job was to drive them to their upper case parking spots.

During our story time, we read a very simple book about making pizza. Each page only had one word, so we covered the illustration and encouraged the kids to guess what the words might be by looking at the letters in them. Then we lifted the flaps to check the illustrations and see if we were right.

We learned a song about pizza (using the old familiar "Bingo" melody) and talked about other things that begin with the letters P-I-Z-Z-A.

We read The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza, Pete's a Pizza, and Something Good - a story about a little girl who has quite an adventure at the grocery store. Then for our friendship circle, we each shared something that we always hope our parents will let us get when we go shopping with them.

We danced to a song about being different fruits and vegetables and did our space yoga flow.

Our friends are doing such a great job sharing about their time with Panda!

The weather was a little dreary but we love the smiles and laughter happening out on the playground! The blossoming trees are beautiful and it was SO sweet to watch the children run into the grass so that they could pick flowers!

We had a great time with your kids this week and look forward to more adventures around the neighborhood. Thanks for all you do to make each day a success - our community just wouldn't be the same without all of you!

We'll see you Monday!
Lisa and Sheri
